(1756 - 1836) Vice President under Jefferson with whom he had been tied in the Presidential election of 1800, defeated through the efforts of Alexander Hamilton, whom he later killed in a duel. Fine association A.L.S. signed with initials ‘AB', 1p. 4to., [n.p.], April 6, [n.y.], to noted Naval Commander and flag designer SAMUEL REID. In part: ‘Please to be at home and to keep yourself disengaged Friday morning – Mr. [?] will probably call on you at an early hour, that is, immediately after the arrival of the Steam Boats of that day – He goes provided with the means of raising a little money & may want your advice…' On integral address leaf addressed in another hand, with period docket in ink at top right. Folds and significant splits at verso, with remnants of blind-embossed seals present. Samuel Reid (1783-1861) commanded a privateer in the War of 1812 and is remembered for his role in designing the third version of the Stars and Stripes.
