Description:

AARON BURR
(1756 - 1836) Vice President under Jefferson with whom he had been tied in the Presidential election of 1800, defeated through the efforts of Alexander Hamilton who he later killed in a duel. D.S. "A. Burr", 1 p., legal folio, New York, May 1, 1831, an agreement between Burr, Joseph Townsend and James W. Robinson. Robinson had purchased from Townsend four lots of land at Broome and Elizabeth Streets in New York. Robinson was in turn indebted to Burr, but in this document, Burr pledges his credit against Robinson's debt. As all three signatures bear lines drawn through them, Burr's pledge was likely unused. That area, part of the Bowery, is now one of the fastest growing parts of New York.
