Description:

A VOYAGE OF THE SLAVE SHIP HANNAH, 1800
An A.L.S. of ‘Stephen Young' 2pp. 4to., Greenock, Scotland, Aug. 8, 1800, to ‘W. Young, Merchant' in Philadelphia, regarding the movement and contents of the slave ship ‘Hannah' owned by his company, which apparently is carrying goods on a journey to New York being made between others during which she transported enslaved peoples. In part: ‘…The Hannah with a light south west breeze sailed yesterday…and this morning she had made up with the Fanny [possibly the Rhode Island-based slave ship] and the [?]. The winds continue S.W…By the Hannah Alex. Crawford & Co. have rendered you a statement of their transactions…and also the original invoices of your goods on board purchased by R. Craig. They have also wrote you by the Fanny and by way of Liverpool…ink glasses after an eight days passage from Glasgow are now arrived…and are being shipped on board the Amsterdam…The Capt and agents judged it improper to detain the Hannah any longer on…the glasses…By the Hannah I also noted the difficulty…from vessels being commanded by British born citizens of the United States and that it would be necessary, as some others do, that an American born citizen should appear as Cap. in the ship's papers. Both Cap. Brown and the Mate have filled their places with propriety, and we think it would be your interest to retain them on board the Hannah...'. The HANNAH was built in 1795 in Liverpool, making four voyages as a slave ship in the triangular trade, the third of which ended on April 6, 1800. On Sept. 1, 1800, a scant three weeks after our letter, the HANNAH once more sailed for Africa to acquire and transport slaves. She was wrecked the following year on Hogsty Reef while returning to London from Jamaica. Very good condition, worthy of further research.
