A STRUT FROM THE ZEPPELIN HINDENBURG
A rare and highly sought-after aviation relic, a Duralumin supporting strut taken from the wreckage of the doomed airship Hindenburg which crashed and burned at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, New Jersey on May 6, 1937. The 9 x 2.5 x 3 in. relic was purchased by noted Virginia Beach militaria dealer Chris Devine from his friend and fellow militaria dealer Brent Smith on Aug. 30, 2007. It was apparently taken from taken from one of 12 tall tables made with separately cast plaques reading: 'STRUT FROM HINDENBURG ZEPPELIN DESTROYED BY FIRE MAY 6/37 LAKEHURST N.J.' An example of one of these tables is held by the San Diego Air & Space Museum, and a large section of Duralumin, 28.5 x 13 x 12 in., was sold for $18,750 by Bonhams in 2018. Sold with a copy of the original sales receipt, photos of the original strut sold to Devine as well as the descriptive placard, an image of the museum-held table, and correspondence between Devine and Smith. Excessively rare!
