A RETURN OF WAGONS AT WILLIAMSBURG
Rare war-date manuscript D.S., 1p. 12 1/4" x 3 3/4", Williamsburg, Jan 5, 1782, a "Return of Waggons &c, under the Comm[an]d of Maj. Jno. Davis W[agon] M[aster] G[eneral]..." The account lists three wagon "conductors": J.W. Sheilds, Joseph Broadhurst, and Joseph Scott, and itemizes the status of the various wagons and teams of horses under their direction. A column entitled "Casualties" itemizes the wagon teams that are out of service or out of communication due to various causes: Sheilds'' entry reads: "1 lost his horses, 1 no. Side, 1 broke". Broadhurst''s lists: "3 Gloster [county], 9 Yorke [county], 5 halfway, 1 broke, & 1 horse lame". Scott''s simply lists: "8 at Hampton with the Duke''s Legion". The document is signed "J. Trenor" in black ink at the conclusion. It is believed that the wagons mentioned in this account were contracted to be used by the French army. Folds, docketed on the verso, else very good. Wartime documents from Williamsburg are rarely seen.
