Rare mounted albumen photograph, "A Pretty Group At An Indian Tent", by John C. Grabill. The 8 3/4" x 6 1/4" photo bears the caption in the plate: "A Pretty Group At An Indian Tent. Jack Redcloud brings the news of surrender and end of war to his lady friends..." Copyrighted by Grabill in 1891. The photo depicts Redcloud atop his horse outside a tepee as four Indian women and a few children regard the camera. Mounted to a page taken from a period military publication, fair condition with a large chip at upper-right, tape remnants at top, and some waviness. Worthy of restoration. Estimated accordingly. Jack Red Cloud was an Oglala Lakota Sioux and son of the great chief, Red Cloud. The "surrender" would refer to the massacre at Wounded Knee and ensuing peace forced upon the Indians. JOHN C. H. GRABILL (1849-1903) was a prominent western photographer most remembered for his important images of the early Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the Sioux Indians, and the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre.
