Description:

188. A PLEA FOR NEW YORK'S CIVIL WAR VETERANS Thought-provoking A.Ms. (unsigned), 22pp. 8vo., [Brooklyn, 1867], in pencil, an anonymous, very descriptive plea for support for funding for the support of maimed Union combat veterans of the Civil War. In small part: "...In this great city of wealth and luxury hundreds of poor crippled soldiers and sailors are starving...almost naked...without homes to shelter them from the cold winter...It is the duty of every man and woman to care...we see some poor maimed veterans grinding on street organs, others giving out handbills for speculators, others carrying on their shoulders quack doctors' advertisemen...this is what the rich city of churches has done for her veterans...are not these poor, starving, crippled veterans [rewarded]...with a brass medal worth about six cents including the ribbon?...". Much more fine content in this beautifully-written account. $200 - 300
