Description:

A PIPE OWNED BY U.S. GRANT
A rare and unusual Presidential relic, a meerschaum pipe once owned by Ulysses S. Grant. The pipe, carved to represent an outstretched arm with a buttoned cuff, has a base carved into the shape of a hand which loosely holds an oval shaped bowl, on which appears the initials "U.S.G." in relief. The mouthpiece is made of cloudy amber and regrettably is broken at about two thirds of the stem's length. Housed in a silk-lined leather case and gilt-stamped "FRANZ HIESS & SOHNE 25 KARNTHERSTRASSE, WIEN" on the interior and additionally on the outside of the case. Accompanied by a copy of the original letter of provenance from America W. Grant, the wife of Ulysses S. Grant, Jr., dated U.S. Grant Hotel, San Diego, Calif., Feb. 3, 1937 attesting to the ownership: "…originally the personal property of president and General U.S. Grant, and as such was used by him during his lifetime. Later becoming the property of his son, the late U.S. Grant Jr. from whose estate it comes". Case bears some scuff marks, pipe has been used, index finger on hand cracked and lost at first joint, crack to amber stem as previously noted.
