Description:

Historically important relic from the Spanish-American War and the resulting end of the Spanish colonial empire, a 1 1/4" x 3/4" section of yellow cloth being a piece of the Spanish flag flown over Fort Santiago when the fort fell, ending the Spanish-American War. On Aug. 13, 1898 Manila - the last Spanish stronghold in the Philippines - capitulated after a fierce bombardment by Admiral George Dewey's guns. At 5:40 PM, after terms were agreed, a three-man landing party from the USS OLYMPIA went ashore, including sailor Sam Furguson who recovered this relic from the Spanish flag which "was lowered in the dust." The cloth is pinned to an 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" sheet with pencil attestation: "Captured by Ensign Ferguson after Battle of Cavite Manila. The U.S. Gov. has two and is looking for this one. Sent to a classmate Hennesy. Ferguson was on the flagship Olympia under Admiral Dewey". From a larger grouping of letters and ephemera related to the OLYMPIA.
