Description:

An interesting Colonial-era publication, "A Narrative of the Captivity and Sufferings of Benjamin Gilbert and his Family; Who Were Surprised by the Indians, and Taken from their Farms, on the Frontiers if Pennsylvania", (London: James Phillips), 1785, 124pp. 12mo., reprinted from the original Philadelphia edition released in 1784. The narrative describes the capture of a family of Quaker settlers and several neighbors in present-day Carbon County, Pennsylvania by a Mohawk war party under British command out of Fort Niagara, New York, during the Revolutionary War. The titular Gilbert family was released upon the group's arrival at Fort Niagara and transported to Montreal, although Benjamin Gilbert died on the journey. The remaining captives would be released by 1782. The publication is bound in marbled paper boards, with some splitting to the spine and some separations between the signatures, with a period ownership inscription to the title page and a few later inscriptions inside the front cover, very good overall.
