Description:

A LOCK OF JOHN F. KENNEDY'S HAIR
A fine relic, approx. 8 short strands of hair from the slain President, taken during a haircut by Kennedy's barber Harry Gelbart. Gelbart was introduced to Kennedy through his brother-in-law Peter Lawford, and the barber - who had cut the hair of many a famous personage, including Bugsy Siegel, Max Baer, Charlie Chaplain, and many others - cut Kennedy's hair on several occasions. So well-known was the man that he appeared in the Oct. 17, 1949 issue of Life Magazine in an article entitled "Barbershop War" about competing shops in Hollywood that catered to the rich and famous. Gelbart states in a letter of provenance dated 1995 (copy included), that he had given the President the haircut from which these strands were taken in July 1963 at "...Lawford's beach house in Santa Monica...Lawford's manager, a gentleman named Milt Ebbins, suggested that I collect the hair I had cut to save as a memento...The President was in his usual good humor, joking and smiling and making me feel very relaxed and welcome, as he always did...". With a COA from noted hair expert John Reznikoff of University Archives.
