Description:

A LOCK OF HAIR AND COMB FROM BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY
(1887 - 1976) British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France, and the drive across the Low Countries into Germany. A scarce relic, a lock of hair from Montgomery, housed within a rose-gold locket along with the comb used during Montgomery's last haircut. The lock was apparently acquired from Hugh L. King (1921-2006), a hairdresser and military badge collector from Farnham in Surrey, England. His clientele included senior retired Army officers, among them Montgomery. On Sept. 10, 1968, Hugh was cutting Montgomery's hair when a young schoolboy awaiting his own haircut, asked for a lock of Montgomery's trimmings. Montgomery graciously complied with the request, and the story appeared in the Daily Express on Sept. 14, 1968. Hugh also retained some hair from that occasion, which is now housed within the locket. In March, 1976, Montgomery fell gravely ill and was confined to his bed. He asked Hugh to give him one last haircut, just days before he died. The comb offered with this locket was the last used on that day. Both pieces are matted with a portrait of Montgomery and a printed version of the story behind them, ready to frame. Regrettably, the brittle comb has lost a few of its teeth, but otherwise both items are in very good condition.
