Description:

Contemporary carbon copy, 1p. legal folio, [n.p., n.d., but certainly Hamburg, ca. July, 1945), a statement offered by an unidentified German girl who secretly aided Russian prisoners at Wilhelmsburg, a sub-camp of Neuengamme. This statement was undoubtedly prepared by British interrogators building their case for the 1946 war crimes trial of eleven Neuengamme defendants. In small part: "...In this camp were 600-700 Russians, a mixture of prisoners of war and workers...They were all very badly treated...My parents...gave the poorest prisoners some food...[and] supplied them with political news which had come over foreign radio. They were fond of me, and I could move in and out of camp...At Christmas 1944, I played Santa Claus...We then organized a Christmas celebration...A number of other children in Wilhelmsburg and I made a collection...I knew everything that was going on...In January 1945...the whole camp was searched for weapons by the Gestapo...At the last moment, 2 Russians...told me where maps, ammunition and a weapon were to be found...I and two eleven year old children succeeded in locating the hiding place...We cleared everything out of it, and stuffed the items under our clothes...if the Gestapo had found this material, several Russians would have been hanged..." Some marginal losses at top, else very good, with translation.
