Description:

A GERMAN FLAG CAPTURED BY AMERICAN LIBERATORS ON THEIR FIRST FULL DAY IN PARIS
A fine relic from the liberation of Paris, a German vehicle recognition flag captured by an American soldier and dated the day after the first Americans enterered the city. The soldier also added the names of 40 of his fellow G.I.s in ink in the white field of the flag. This cotton two-piece N.S.D.A.P. flag measures 38" x 27" and has brass grommets at all corners so that the flag could be tied to the roof or hood of a vehicle. The soldier, probably "W. R. COOK", notes in black ink: "TAKEN IN PARIS 8-26-44" and adds the names of those with him, including his commanding officer, one "LT. DELOZIER". The French under Leclerc disobeyed orders and were the first to enter Paris, on August 24th, with the Americans following the next day. The city was far from calm at this time, with Germans snipers even firing upon Leclerc's victory parade on the 26th. We have confirmed that the men listed were from the 4th Infantry Division, the first to enter the grateful city, and several would die in combat later in the war. Lt. William Delozier would be awarded the Silver Star. Very good.
