Description:

A DOOMED JEW WRITES FROM UNIEJOW, POLAND
Excessively rare handwritten and signed postcard from one 'F. Wanderman' in Uniejow, Poland, Sep. 29, 1940 to his aunt and uncle in Washington, DC, bearing on the face Nazi and censor's stamps and thus sent from the ghetto in Uniejow, located in central Poland. The message, in stilted German, is untranslated. Very good condition. In September 1939, during the German invasion of Poland, Polish units resisted here the advancing Wehrmacht. During the heavy fighting, Uniejow was partially burned. In revenge, the Germans carried out two massacres of Polish inhabitants, killing 50. The 1,000 Jews in the town were also immediately brutalized, kidnapped for forced labor, beaten, and robbed. In 1940, they were moved into a ghetto. In October 1941, all the community's Jewish population was sent to a ghetto in Kowale Panskie where in July 1942 most were sent to the Chelmno extermination camp where they were immediately gassed. A few were sent to the Lodz Ghetto. There were few survivors among Uniejow's Jewish population, perhaps around 20. Multiple splits fixed with archival tape on the verso.
