Description:

A DOOMED JEW'S POLISH IDENTITY PAPER
German-issued identity paper printed in Polish and German, 1p. 8vo., [n.d., Krzepice, Poland], issued to Abe Morgenstern. Morgenstern, born in 1923, signs the form giving his vital statistics and religion ['Jew'], as well as stating whether or not he owns property and businesses - obviously with the aim of seeking their confiscation. Finally, the man applies two fingerprints at the bottom. Well-worn with folds from having been carried on his person by Morgenstern. On September 3, 1939, during the German invasion of Poland, German troops massacred 30 Poles in Krzepice and then occupied the town. Krzepice had a sizeable Jewish community, 43% of the town's population, before World War II. In early 1940, the Germans set up an open type of ghetto there with about 1,800 inmates, along with the Judenrat and the Jewish police. The Jews were forced to perform slave labor until the liquidation of the ghetto in June and July 1942, when most of them were sent to Auschwitz. Those who remained were deported to the ghetto in Sosnowiec. Only a handful survived the Holocaust, most subsequently left Poland. The stone-and-brick synagogue in Krzepice, built around 1822, still stands, although unused and in a dilapidated state. Multipliable splits fixed with archival tape on the verso.
