899. A CONFEDERATE RECRUIT IS EXEMPTED FROM MILITARY DUTY A rare war-date Confederate exemption document, 1p. oblong 8vo., issued in ink by a certain John T. Franklin, Bedford County, [Va.], Mar. 19, 1862 asserting that John T. Pelin [?] is exempt from military service. In part: "To the board of exemptions of Bedford County. Your petitioner asked to be exempted from the performance of military duty ...because he is permanently unable to discharge the duties of a soldier being afflicted with scrotal hernia. He volunteered in Capt. Wilson's Company ..." On the verso in pencil two medical doctors noted their findings, reading, in full: "Case of scrotal Hernia, large size. Permanent".
