A CONFEDERATE DESCRIBES POW CAMP LAWTON
Fine content letter from a Georgia Confederate soldier, A.L.S. "H V Harris", 4pp., 8vo., "Camp Lawton", Oct. 27, 1864, to his children. Confederates had recently finished construction on Camp Lawton, a POW camp; by November it would hold over 10,000 Union prisoners, shuttled down from Camp Sumter to stymie Sherman. The 40-acre camp, this letter suggests, was less than ideal, even for the Confederates: "...I have moved to this place it is a new place...the stockade has forty acres of land in it...I don't think that it is a veary healthy country the chills and fever is here... provisions is scarce we git meal a plenty we git one pound of beef to the man for one day's rations every other day and the next day about one half pint or a little more of green syrup... and some peas that the weavle has eaten...". Moderately toned with moderate folds and marginal chipping, small archival repairs of separations at verso, slight paper loss on all pages at lower right.
