Description:

A BRITISH NURSE ON PRE-WAR POLITICS AND THE BLITZ
Group of nine A.L.S.s, 29pp. total, largely undated but possibly commencing June 18, 1940, all sent by "Gladys", a Royal Navy nurse to Ken Behr, an Army aviator who would later manage Floyd Bennet Field in New York. All but two of the letters were sent from England, with one sent from aboard a ship, the last sent from Ceylon. In small part: "lots of your people are very bitter about Chamberlain still we do not think he is such an old fool......we had waited to see that France had finished fighting...now we have no one to let us down or turn traitor, we depend on ourselves only...we are all prepared to dig ourselves in...my brother John is in the air force...everyone expects parachutists to arrive...how badly we had been blitzed. London has been knocked about...we haven't had any raids for the past few days...Have just been up to London...the worst raid London has so far had, still we are still alive...we went on a mobile unit doing casualty and shelter work...they decided to try and wipe out Plymouth...we can hear the planes flying overhead and the guns blazing...after every raid there is a casualty list...a house almost at the bottom of our garden was hit by an oil bomb..." More content, very good.
