Description:

A BOOK OF HITLER CARICATURES FROM THE SS LIBRARY AT DACHAU
An incredible association piece, a published book of caricatures of Adolf Hitler, many unflattering, once held in libraries of the SS at Dachau! The book "Hitler in the Cartoons of the World / Deed versus Ink" was edited by Ernst "Putzi" Hanfstaengl, one of Hitler's closest advisors and liaisons early on (Berlin: Verlag Braune Bucher), 1933. 178pp. 7" x 9 3/4", with the rare intact dust jacket. This volume, authorized by Hitler, bears full-page anti-Hitler political and propaganda cartoons with opposite pages bearing descriptions of the accusation made in the cartoon, and the "truth" as seen by the Nazis. The front flyleaf bears the purple stamps of the command headquarters of the SS training center at Dachau, as well as the SS base library there. Beneath that stamp, inventory information has been penned by hand. Most chilling is the pasted-in bookplate reading: "From the Book-Series of the SS-Totenkopf Standarte 'Oberbayern'". The SS-Totenkopf-Standarte Oberbayern was formed in Dachau in 1937 and undertook "police duties" during the invasion of Poland. These included hunting down the remaining Polish soldiers, terrorizing the civilians and murdering political leaders, priests, intellectuals and Jews. The original paper wrapper is present, as is a mimeographed layout of the camp at Dachau kept by the soldier who found this book. The book bears a clean 1" cut through the front cover (only), as if it were stabbed with a combat knife.
