Description:

113. A BOOK FROM JEFFERSON DAVIS' LIBRARY A book believed to be from Brierfield, the plantation home of CSA President Jefferson Davis, "American Military Biography, Containing the Lives and Characters of the Officers of the Revolution", Whetstone & Buxton, Cincinnati, 1829, bearing a pencil notation on the front flyleaf in a period hand: "40 miles from Vicksburg April 18, 1863. taken from Davis's plantation". There are two signatures in the book, "C. C. Gould" and "Wm. Gleason" which we have been unable to associate with the plantation but which may be the name of a Union soldier who snatched this book. The covers are worn at the edges, the spine is well-worn and chipped, pages within are moderately foxed here and there. In Warren County, Mississippi, twenty miles south of Vicksburg, is Davis Island on which was located Brierfield Plantation, owned by Jefferson Davis. Hurricane Plantation, owned by Joseph Davis, his older brother, was also located on this island. Both homes were occupied by Union troops in 1862. No original structures remain today: Federal troops burned the Joseph Davis mansion in 1862, and Brierfield burned accidentally in 1931. $400 - 600
