Description:

A fine war relic, a rare book presented to Adolf Hitler by one of Germany's worst war criminals, liberated from Hitler's retreat at Berchtesgaden by an American officer. The book is the first section of the 'Reise-Atlas von Baiern' by Adrian von Riedl, published in Munich, 1796, 60pp. large 4to. (first register?), with ten copperplates including a marvelous two-page plate showing Munich, in brown calf with gilt lettering. Covers rubbed at spine and corners, a few trivial spots, with contents fine. This was certainly a lavish gift, as this book is considered one of the finest atlases ever printed. The front flyleaf bears a gift inscription by PHILIPP BOUHLER (1889 - 1945), a Nazi war criminal who supervised Hitler's euthanasia program which ordered the 'mercy killings' of thousands of disabled and mentally ill Germans. As was the case with the recipient of this gift, Bouhler and his wife committed suicide as Allied forces closed in on him. Beneath appears a pencil provenance from a French liaison officer attached to the 7th Army, in French: 'Captured in the 'refuge' of Hitler at Berchtesgaden by 2nd Lt. Roger Salula [?] H.Q. 7th Army 7 May 1945' with his signature added below. Overall, very good.
