A 19-YEAR OLD BEGS POLK TO FIGHT IN MEXICO
Fascinating A.L.S., "Charles P. Bunnell", 1p. folio, Butternuts, NY, Aug. 7, 1847, a plea from the nineteen-year old asking President James K. Polk for an army commission in the Mexican War. In part: "...Honord [sic] Sir... it is through the downfall of Mercantile business and a warm desire to enter your Army that I ask this favor of you. My request is that you will commission me in some part of your Army where my burning sperate [sic] may be satisfied...my Blood Boils to be with my countrymen in arms. It is the regard that I have for my honerable [sic] family that has prevented me from joining as a privet [sic]...". Integral address leaf addressed to Polk bears a Butternuts postmark and a handstamp cancel with the date of August 9. Minor folds, very good.
