Description:

130. 99TH PENNSYLVANIA RECRUITING BROADSIDE Great Civil War illustrated recruiting broadside, 20" x 28", bearing eagle vignette at top with a banner reading "HO! FOR SAVANNAH!". The broadside reads: "Recruits Wanted for the JACKSON ZOUAVES Company I, 99th Reg't Pennsylvania Volunteers, Col. T. W. Sweney: Clothes furnished at once. Pay and rations commence at time of signing the roll. Regiment is now stationed in Virginia, near Alexandria...Capt. John Carberry, commanding...A few good Non-Commissioned Officers Wanted..." Folds, with a small loss at center, a 12" and 4" tear from bottom margin, fold splits starting, still entirely presentable and a scarce item. Set into an antique frame. This is certainly an early broadside: Sweeney (name misspelled here) resigned on Jan. 24, 1862. The 99th Pa. Vols. served with distinction: they were closely engaged at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville where they charged with Gen. Phil Kearny, was heavily engaged on the second day at Gettysburg, at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and in the pursuit of Lee to Appomattox. $2,500-3,500
