Description:

92ND (BLACK) INFANTRY DIVISION ID'ED VETERAN'S DISPLAY
A period display made by, or in honor of a black soldier who had served in the 92nd Infantry Division ('Buffalo Soldiers') under French command during World War I, notably during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. The 18.5 x 22 in. oval display has a painted wood frame and original bowed glass. Within, the display displays all of the insignia and relics on a section of a period American flag. At the top is a postcard photograph of the corporal in uniform above an approx. 6 x 9 in. piece of embroidered cloth with a star and 'INFANTRY' similar to banners flown from windows showing a son in military service. At right is a very rare shoulder patch of the 92nd, a black buffalo with black edge sewn to a burgundy backing, and likely field made. The buffalo represents the nickname of the regiment, the 'Buffalo Soldiers'. At left is the man's World War I Victory Medal and matching ribbon pin (both have come loose from the display), and a Calhoun County patriotic pin. Included also is the 'eagle" discharge of the owner of these items, Col. George Zellers of Lincoln Co., Ga., 2pp. 4to., Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., June 7, 1919. A foundry worker, Zellers is shown to have fought on the 'Verdun Front 1918'. Overall very good.
