Description:

92ND (BLACK) INFANTRY DIVISION ID'ED 'BUFFALO SOLDIERS' HELMET
A rare find, a helmet worn by an identified member of the 92nd U.S. Infantry, the 'Buffalo Soldiers', a distinguished black regiment under white command which fought with great distinction during World War I, during World War I, notably during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. The helmet is painted in black-bordered areas of blue, red, white, brown, and silver. At the front is a hand-painted white circle containing a small side view of a blue buffalo, the emblem of the division. In the white areas at the right, the owner identifies himself in black lettering: 'Frank Allen Supply Co. 349th F.A.' Beside the inscription, he writes: '92nd Div.' Finally, on one side of the helmet he paints: 'A.E.F.', and on the other, he paints a small image of a steamship. The exterior paint has flaked and some rust shows through, yet the piece still remains entirely acceptable. The helmet lacks its lining. An exceedingly rare item!
