Description:

8TH INFANTRY DIVISION COMBAT HISTORY, PREPARED IN THE FIELD
War-date typed draft combat history, prepared in the field, 19pp. 4to., covering the period from August 21 to November 23, 1944. The cover of the report indicates that this report, titled: 'COMBAT HISTORY 8TH INFANTRY DIVISION 21 AUGUST TO [date not filled in] was prepared for the 'Assistant Division Commander'. No author of the work is cited. This day-to-day accounting has entries that average about a paragraph long each. It opens with the division outside Brest, encountering stiff German resistance, artillery, and German soldiers infiltrating the lines dressed in American uniforms. They encounter the wall surrounding the city, which poses further problems for their attack, and soon start coordinated attacks using the 13th and 18th Infantry Regiments. Following the surrender of the German garrison of Sep. 19, which is briefly described, the division was directed north towards Rennes, Ettlebruck, Luxembourg, and Chartres. On Oct. 22, Gen. Courtney Hodges and the 1st U.S. Army takes control of the division, which is soon emplaced along the Siegfried Line, largely near Wiltz and Niederfeulen. The account terminates abruptly after the description of an abortive attack in the Hurtgen Forest at the end of November. Very good condition. This account was typed in at the very least weekly installments, as the paper type changes, as do the typewriter impressions.
