Description:

8TH ILLINOIS 'BLACK DEVILS' OFFICER'S ILLUSTRATED ROSTER
An important Black World War I document, a roster of Company L, 8th Illinois Infantry, 11.75 x 18.75 in., bearing a portrait of 2nd Lt. Floyd R. Chavis in uniform at the top. The presentation displays American flags, bugles, cannon firing, etc., and was issued at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, with the further notation that the regiment was mustered in at Springfield on June 30, 1916. A small damp stain at the bottom, small interior tear, and some slight toning and soiling, else very good, in original wood frame. It was only during the regiment's valiant service during the war that it would be re-designated the 370th Infantry Regiment, therefore this presentation is war-dated. The 8th Illinois, nicknamed the 'Black Devils' by their German adversaries, first saw action in the Spanish American War, where it first made United States' history with its all-black officer corps. In World War I, where it fought under French command, it was still the only American unit entirely commanded by Black officers. The regiment fought with distinction, earning streamers for the battles of Lorraine and Oise-Aisne.
