Description:

Nice 8th Air Force, 94th Heavy Bombardment Group identified bombardier's overseas cap with the officer's flight records. The cap, with lieutenant's bar, is in excellent condition and is accompanied by Army Air Force Physical Record Card issued to its owner, F/O Lt. Loren William Grueber, July 2, 1944. Also included are 46 pages of Grueber's flight records, from 1943 to 1957. After 155 hours of flight time in the U.S. training as a bombardier, largely at Ardmore, Grueber was sent to England and made his first flight on a B-17, as a bombardier, on Oct. 22, 1944. He would make an amazing 56 more flights before finally being transferred back home! Also included is a 5" x 4" photo of Grueber with his fellow Crewmen posed before B-17 no. 5196, and his wool 8th Air Force shoulder patch. Most of the original crewmen of that aircraft perished aboard another B-17 in a midair collision over Belgium. Grueber's craft, 5196, would survive the war and end up with the RCAF.
