Description:

(1832-1889) Career American soldier who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he became the first commander of the 9th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, a Buffalo soldier regiment with African-American troops commanded by white officers. Good content manuscript D.S. as commander of the West Division Cavalry Bureau, 1p. 4to., St. Louis, June 17, 1864, a set of special orders addressed to Lt. Bayless S. Campbell of the 7th Kansas Cavalry. Hatch commands that the purchase of cavalry horses for the Bureau in the open market is to be suspended, and orders Campbell to report to his headquarters to be placed on duty within the Bureau. Hatch signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank "Brig General Com'g WD Cav Bureau". Bears a vertical inscription confirming transportation for Campbell in red ink, shows mailing fields with some splits thereto repaired on the verso with archival tape, else very good.
