Description:

79TH PENNSYLVANIA SERGEANT''S SWORD AND COMMISSION
A fine pair of items concerning the Civil War service of Sgt. Paul Myer of the 79th Pa. Vols., includes Myer''s sword and scabbard and his commission given at war''s end promoting him to First Sergeant. Myer, a resident of Lancaster County, Pa., enlisted as a sergeant on Sep. 24, 1861 and was mustered into Co. "F". He would serve with the same regiment steadily until Sep. 12, 1865. Myer''s sword is present, a Model 1840 NCO model by Emerson & Silver, Trenton, the blade and scabbard also marked with inspector''s stamp "U.S. DFM". Myer''s name, with an alternative spelling as was often seen, is crudely embossed with period stamps at the throat of the scabbard: "PAUL MEYER 79 PENN VOLS." There is a ding at the throat, ant the brass tip near the drag bears a slight bow and a dent, paint is worn, but the scabbard and especially the sword remain in otherwise very good condition. Also present is Myer''s promotion to the rank of First Sergeant, given in Washington on June 15, 1865 and signed by Major Michael H. Locher. Toned at extreme margins. Two pieces. Fighting largely in the west, the 79th was engaged at Perryville, Stones River, Tullahoma, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Resaca, Kennesaw, and in Sherman''s March to Georgia and in the Carolinas. Nice pair of historic relics.
