Description:

79TH INFANTRY DIVISION "SOUVENIR" MAPS
Good group of four souvenir maps, each 34" x 26 1/2", prepared by the 79th Infantry Division and printed by a publisher in occupied Germany immediately postwar, charting the division''s advance through Europe. Each of the four maps depicts their movements in a specific time frame: "Through France" from June 14 through August 29, 1944; "To Belgium and Back" from August 31 through October 25; "To the Rhine" from October 25, 1944 to February 14, 1945; and "Over the Rhine" from February 17 to May 9. Each map bears several color vignettes, depicting marches through heavy rain, wrecked German vehicles and surrendering troops, a U.S.O. show, winter in foxholes, mortar crews, supply convoys, and more. Each map shows chips and toning to the edges, with cello tape repairs to the first example, else very good. Elements of the 79th Infantry Division landed at Utah Beach on D-Day, and were also notable for being among the first American soldiers to cross the Seine. They were engaged in heavy fighting at the Siegfried Line and in their attempts to cross the Rhine.
