Description:

Guidon, 27 x 40 in., for the 6th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, Troop L. This swallow-tail wool guidon features a red top half with the sewn-on text in white: ‘VI' and a white lower half with the text in pink: ‘L'. By World War II cotton often replaced the common wool guidons. This fact along with the stitching leads us to believe this example is likely World War I era. Displayed in a simple black frame, enhancing the already still bright colors. A few moth holes throughout, else very good. The 6th Cavalry was originally organized during the Civil War in 1861 as part of the Union Army, seeing action at Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Between then and World War I they would participate in the Apache Wars, the infamous Ghost Dance War, Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War, and the search for Pancho Villa. During World War I the ‘Fighting Sixth' travelled to France where they were mainly regulated to military police duties. Keeping with the times the regiment would become a solely mechanized unit in World War II and was renamed the 6th Mechanized Cavalry, serving in Gen. Patton's Third Army. They eventually earned the nickname ‘Patton's Household Cavalry'. After World War II the regiment was reorganized and split into different squadrons, serving in the Cold War and the War on Terrorism.
