Description:

War-date letter sent home by Union Pvt. Elbridge Franklin, Co. C, 5th Michigan Infantry, 4pp. 8vo., "Camp in front of Yorktown [Va.]", Apr. 26, 1862 to his father on the siege of Yorktown. In small part: "...Still here near Yorktown...preparing for the battle. We could not have been convinced when we marched from Hampton that we should have been here so long without making an assault...3 weeks have passed and the battle has not been fought...2/3 of our entrenchments are completed...The one nearest us...mounts 5 rifles 32 pounders(siege guns) & one 20 pdr. field piece Battery No. 6...is masked by an undergrowth of timber. We have one battery near the river which mounts 10 100 pdrs...Small works have been thrown up in view of the enemy behind which our field artillery can be wheeled..." Franklin mentions his brother Luther, ill and debilitated, who would by KIA at Gettysburg. With transmittal cover. Very good. The Confederates would remain in Yorktown until withdrawing on May 4.
