Description:

War-date "diary" sent home by Union Pvt. Elbridge Franklin, Co. C, 5th Michigan Infantry, 6pp. 8vo., [n.p.], Dec. 29, 1861 to Jan. 19, 1862. In small part: "...Funeral of a private of Co. D...Received the news of the giving up of Mason & Slidell...Regimental inspection & mustering in by Col. Poe of the Regular Army...the whole army mustered today...for the coming pay day...A scouting party fired on by the rebels near Polish Church. Lieut. Dennison & a private in the cavalry were wounded. The pickets rallied to headquarters and remained there...The infantry were deployed as skirmishers...we went to the church...without encountering any rebels...Went on guard at 8 AM...The whole Regt started for picket at 9...stationed on or along the telegraph road with our headquarters at the house of a Secesh...Guarded a female prisoner at the house...A collision of ours and Rebels' scouts beyond Polish Church...A private of Co. H was killed...the rebels left their dead..." Franklin then adds "a description of skirmishing", a great full-page detailed account of the use of skirmishers to flush-out entrenched enemy forces, describing their formation, posture, tactics, weapon handling, etc. Very good.
