5TH MICHIGAN CAVALRY - SMITH H. HASTINGS
(1843 - 1905) Distinguished Colonel of the 5th Michigan Cavalry, serving under George A. Custer. Hastings mustered in as a private and rose through the ranks, his regiment engaged at Gettysburg and responsible for killing J. E. B. Stuart. Hastings himself was awarded the medal of Honor for his actions at Chester Gap. Important group of documents, includes: Hastings'' State of Michigan military appointment to the rank of First Lieutenant in the 5th Michigan Cavalry, 1p. sm. folio, Jan. 16, 1863; similar appointment to the rank of Captain in the 5th Michigan Cavalry, Apr. 20, 1863; and a third similar appointment to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Michigan Cavalry, Dec. 17, 1864. All three documents are signed by Michigan Gov. Austin Blair. Also included is a war-date D.S. by Hastings, 4pp. 4to., [n.p.], Feb. 1, 1865, to Michigan''s Adjutant General listing his recommendation of eight men to fill vacancies in the ranks of officers, and an unsigned document, 1p. folio, an accounting of his pay clothing allowance, servants, etc. from Nov. 20, 1864 to July 3, 1865. Five pieces, overall very good.
