Description:

54TH MASSACHUSETTS RECRUITING CIRCULAR
Very rare recruiting handbill, 1p. 8vo., given to out-of-state blacks urging them to enlist in colored regiments in Massachusetts (of which there were but three). It reads in full: "If you will go to MASSACHUSETTS and enlist in the Black Regiments, you will get - PAY - Thirteen Dollars per month by the United States. RATIONS - Same as the White Regiments. CLOTHING - Same as the White Regiments. BOUNTY - Fifty Dollars from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and One Hundred Dollars at the end of the time for which you are enlisted by the United States. PERIOD OF ENLISTMENT - Three years, if the Waris not ended earlier; if it is, the end of the War. BOUNTIES - Not payable until after the Regiment is mustered in". Light folds, else fine condition. This flyer may have been printed by bounty agents, or possibly by the regiments themselves, but were almost undoubtedly used by all three Massachusetts colored regiments.
