Description:

509TH COMPOSITE GROUP MAP OF HIROSHIMA
Important July, 1945 'HIROSHIMA AREA TARGET CHART NO. 22' owned by a member of the 509th Composite Group, the bomber group which included the Enola Gay and Bocks Car, the B-29 aircraft that delivered atomic bombs to Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9, 1945 respectively. The map was prepared by '949TH ENGR AVN TOPO CO.', and issued by the A-S Section, XXI Bomber Command. Hiroshima is located 34 deg 38 min. N, 132 deg. 50 min. E. The map is stamped 'SECRET' at top, crossed-out once the piece was declassified. Folds. SOLD WITH: two letters written by Staff Sergeant Homer L. Cullom to his wife. Collum served in the 603rd Air Engineering Squadron, 509th Composite Composite Group. One 2pp. 8vo. letter is written from Tinian on July 30, 1945 - a week before Paul Tibbets would take off in the Enola Gay for Hiroshima. Of course, no mention is made of the mission, but Collum mentions a 'terrible storm... I thought the tents were going to blow away...' and how a mutual friend from home had with his father been hurt in an explosion. The second letter, again from Tinian on Sep. 28, has strictly friendly content. Three pieces, very good.
