Description:

Fine piece of original hand-painted, World War II U.S. Army Air Forces squadron insignia, 12" x 14", depicting a red devil figure being struck by two bolts of lightning. The name of the unit which adopted this insignia, the 384th Fighter Squadron, is typed at top left. Original insignia art for a second unit, the 504th Fighter Squadron, depicting a cartoon seal astride an anthropomorphic bomb, is affixed face-down to the verso of the first insignia, due to the reaction of the paint to moisture during storage. Unfortunately, this second illustration cannot be removed by us without causing further damage. The 384th Fighter Squadron insignia shows tape remnants, bumps and small tears to the corners, else very good. The 384th Fighter Squadron was activated in 1943 and deployed to England in 1944, where it flew first the P-38 Lightning and later the P-51 Mustang in the bomber escort, ground attack and fighter sweep roles, which it performed during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.
