Description:

374TH FIGHTER SQUADRON ORIGINAL INSIGNIA ART BY DAN DECARLO
Fine piece of original hand-painted World War II U.S. Army Air Forces squadron insignia, 10 1/2" x 15", depicting a native American face within the beak of a large "thunderbird", in front of a lightning bolt. The illustration is signed at lower right with the initials "D. D.", for artist Dan DeCarlo, in black ink. This design was adopted as the insignia of the 374th Fighter Squadron, part of the 361st Fighter Group, which flew P-47 Thunderbolt fighters in the bomber escort and ground attack roles. Shows pin holes at the corners, else very good. DAN DECARLO (1919-2001) was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and stationed in England as a motor pool technician and draftsman, where he designed nose art and squadron insignia for the U.S.A.A.F. He would go on to gain fame with Archie Comics, where he modernized the strip's overall look, as well as creating the characters Josie and the Pussycats and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
