Description:

372ND REGIMENT (BLACK) IDENTIFIED TUNIC, DOG TAGS, AND HELMET
An incredible ensemble consisting of a very rare 372nd Regiment tunic, helmet and dog tags which accompanied both, identified to Pvt. Robert E. Lewis, Headquarters Co. 372nd Regiment, 2335186. The wool tunic bears the 'Red Hand' shoulder patch of the division, a two-piece patch consisting of red embroidery on a white disc, machine stitched to a dark blue wool backing which in turn was hand sewn to the tunic. There is a red discharge stripe on the upper part of the left sleeve and a green overseas stripe on the lower part of the same sleeve. These too were hand sewn to the tunic. There are two collar discs attached to the tunic, one being for Company B of the 372nd, the other being an enlisted man's 'USNA' disc. Lewis' two dog tags, found in the pocket of the tunic are still strong and are included with the second company collar disc. The tunic is lined and is free of any mothing or other damage. The helmet bears a green sand-painted finish and is decorated at the front with '372' and the same 'red hand' emblem, both with white fields and blue edges. The emblems are a bit worn after 100 years, but almost completely intact. The liner is present and largely intact, though the chin strap has been cropped. An excessively rare grouping. The 372nd Infantry Regiment was a segregated African American regiment, nominally a part of the 93rd Division, that served in World War I under French Army command. During nine days of intense fighting in October, 1918, the 372nd progressed nine kilometers through powerful German defenses, taking nearly 600 prisoners, 15 guns artillery pieces, 20 minenwerfers, and nearly 150 machine guns, securing an enormous amount of engineering material, an important supply of artillery ammunition, and brought down by fire three enemy aircraft.
