2ND INFANTRY DIVISION HAND-PAINTED SOUVENIR
A hand-painted tin souvenir created by a member of the famous U.S. 2nd Infantry Division which fought with distinction through Normandy (starting on D-Day +1) into the Rhineland. The shield-shaped relic bears the division's emblem, an Indian with headdress, on one side, the reverse showing the names of about 25 locations where the division trained or was otherwise stationed in England and Wales prior to departure for the Continent. The piece also bears a cloverleaf and red rose, and is signed by its artist, 'Liberto Vilarino'. Found in the The Bismarck Tribune (Bismarck, North Dakota) newspaper from Monday, December 11, 1944 reads: '...The champion army sign painter T/4 is Liberto Vilarino, of Los Angeles, Vilarino scoffed: 'I made 17,000 in Normandy alone and once turned out 3,700 in one day.' He used red, white and black, he has painted 35,000 signs since landing in France. His nearest rival slapped out 15,000...' Liberto Vilarino, Army Serial Number 19160037, enlisted on September 25th, 1942 in Los Angeles California.
