Description:

27TH INFANTRY REGIMENT SOLDIER'S SIBERIAN EXPEDITION PHOTO ALBUM
A very fine photo album, 76pp. 4to., assembled in a cloth-bond two-ring binder by a Pvt. George E. Brown of Company G of the 27th Infantry Regiment, primarily documenting that regiment's service with the American Expeditionary Force sent to Siberia from 1918 to 1920 during the Russian Civil War. The album contains approx. 160 original photographs, almost all real-photo postcards, and approx. 45 additional commercial litho postcards, charting the regiment's departure from California and arrival at Vladivostok, its service throughout Siberia, and its eventual return to the U.S. via Hong Kong, the Philippines and Hawaii. The majority of the photo postcards are labeled and numbered within the plate, and consist of numerous depictions of the regiment on patrol and encamped in winter uniforms, Siberian civilians, markets, towns and villages, trains ransacked by Bolshevik forces, Bolshevik prisoners of war (one labeled ‘awaiting execution'), Japanese soldiers (with whom the 27th was involved in an armed standoff during the ‘Evgenevka Incident'), and much else. Additional views show the regiment aboard transport ships, scenes of various ports of call, and more, with two images of Pvt. Brown in uniform on the first page. Some additional pieces of ephemera, including Russian currency and stamps, newspaper clippings and documents related to Pvt. Brown, are also present. Most pieces are securely affixed to the page, with the first five pages partly detached from the binder. Should be seen.
