Description:

Canvas duffel bag, approx. 34" x 19" (flat), with drawstring closure at top. The bag is painted with the World War I-era roundel of the Air Service of the American Expeditionary force in red, blue and white. The insignia of the 27th Aero Squadron, a plunging eagle over blue and red orbs, is painted near the opening, above the stenciled name of the owner, "O.D. Beeson". The insignia and identifying inscription are somewhat faded, with a period patch sewn between to two sets of insignia, and some soiling overall, else very good. The 27th Aero Squadron arrived in France in March of 1918 and was trained to fly the Sopwith Camel, Nieuport 28 and SPAD XIII fighters. The squadron was deployed to the Western Front on April 24, and began combat operations in June. In this role they supported infantry advances and engaged German fighters, including those of Jagdeschwader 1, Manfred von Richtofen's famous "flying circus". The squadron took part in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives before the Armistice.
