Description:

HARLAN NELSON HARTNESS (1898 - 1986) Highly-decorated Brigadier General, Assistant Commanding General and later Commanding General of the 26th 'Yankee' Infantry Division during World War II, which fought in the Battle of the Bulge and liberated the Gusen concentration camp with the 11th Armored Division. He later served as the Commanding General of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea between 1946 and 1948, then as the Commanding General of the 4th Infantry Division between 1950 and 1953, ending his military career as Director of the Office of Armed Forces Information & Education, Department of Defense (European Command). Recipient of the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, French Legion of Honor, French Croix de Guerre with Star, French Croix de guerre with Palms, European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, among others. His rare original Brigadier General's flag, 28 x 17.5 in., constructed of red cotton bunting with a stitched-on white star at center. One side has been folded and sewn to form a hoist, and one end of the hoist bears an inspection tag from the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot sewn inside. The tag bears faint markings from a purple ink stamp, with the year '1942' barely visible and other markings largely illegible. Hartness was appointed the rank of Brigadier General this exact year, and carried this rank throughout the war, including the division's advance into Germany, the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of Gusen. The hoist has been sewn around a leather strip with a hole punched at each end, likely for hanging by tying a rope from each end. Some moth holes, else very good condition. This flag was taken from a large grouping of Hartness's uniforms and other items, consigned to us from a prominent private collection on public display.
