Description:

19TH CENTURY SHAKER INLAID SEWING BOX
An attractive hinged wooden box, 11.25 x 7.75 x 3.75 in., likely made by members of the Shaker community. It consists of several pieces of expertly inlaid wood, mostly cherry and maple. Within is ample space for sewing needles and several yards of yarn. It is lined with blue paper on the base and intricate diamond patterned paper on the top, which supports a mirror. The original key is missing, but the lock is intact, along with the two brass hinges. Lightly stained with some very minor wood damage, otherwise very good. The Shakers are a small sect of Christianity that began in England but moved to North America in 1774 practicing celibacy, communal living, confession, egalitarianism, and pacifism. Over time they have earned notoriety as craftsmen with their simplistic and efficient designs, especially the oval shaped boxes used for the storage of dried goods. As of now, there are only two practicing members.
