Description:

19TH CENTURY CENSUS SHOWS A DECLINE IN SLAVERY
Newspaper ‘The Evansville Daily Journal', 4pp., Indiana, March 5, 1861, most notably detailing recent census information. In part: ‘...from 1790 to 1800 the aggregate increase was but 1,400,000, the increase from 1850 to 1860 was 8,400,000, or more than the entire population in 1810...exceeding that of any European nation, except Russia...the ratio of increase amongst the whites is much greater than that of the black...the slave population is following behind the free in progress...the slave population is declining. In twenty years it will not be more than 10 percent of the whole. Thus one of the great social and political elements of the country is sensibly on the decline...The old states have relatively far less slave population, while the whole increase of slaves, and three-fourths the whole number have accumulated round the Gulf of Mexico...parallel tendencies of black population to the Gulf of Mexico, and of white population to the Northwest...' Marginal tears, else very good.
