Description:

Fine set of eighteen 16 x 20 in. prints reproducing eighteen paintings from notable NSDAP-approved artist Peter Philippi, as exhibited during the 1943 'Grosse Deutsche Kunstausstellung' ('Great German Art Exhibition') at the 'Haus der Deutsche Kunst' ('House of German Art') in Munich. The works are mostly portraits and peasant scenes, as was typical with Philippi's works. The set is housed in a card stock folder, bearing the title of the exhibition, listing the works within, and identifying the publisher as the Munich firm of Hitler's personal photographer, Heinrich Hoffman. This folder is in turn housed in a larger paperboard portfolio, printed with the name, date and insignia of the exhibition on the front cover. Tiny spots of foxing to the front cover with one small spot of staining, both mentioned only for accuracy. Near fine to fine condition, and in much better condition than usually seen. This set was uniquely owned by CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888 - 1972), the American general who took command of the 1st Infantry Division, popularly known as the 'Big Red One', in early August of 1943. He commanded the division during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, where it was the first force to face the Germans on Omaha Beach, and he joined his men on the beach the same day. The division was instrumental in the breakthrough following the battle for St. Lo and in foiling the German counteroffensive at Mortain. This lot originates from a direct linear descendant.
