Description:

1943 507TH P.I.R. REGIMENTAL YEARBOOK
A rare imprint, the 507th Parachute Infantry Regimental yearbook (Denver: Bradford-Robinson Printing Co.), undated but ca. late 1943. Approx. 300pp. 9 x 12 in. with illustrated embossed cover, fine condition. A fine, fully illustrated unit history of this regiment that would soon be employed in some of the heaviest fighting in the European campaign. The 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment was initially formed at Fort Benning on 20 July 1942, under command of Col. George V. Millett. It would participate in three operations during World War II: D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Varsity. The 507th PIR was assigned to the veteran 82nd Airborne Division, under Major General Matthew Ridgway. On D-Day, the regiment was tasked with helping to secure the Merderet River crossings. The 507th continued to fight in the Battle of Normandy, sustaining heavy casualties (losing almost 200 men in two days shortly before being withdrawn), before returning to England in July. The 507th redeployed to France on 25 December and was used in the counter-attacks against the Germans in January and early February 1945.
