1143. 1937 ORANGE BOWL CHAMPIONS: DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY Exceedingly rare newspaper photograph, 6" x 12 1/2", captioned: "They're Big and Tough, These Duquesne Boys Who Play Mississippi State In Our Orange Bowl Friday", below caption is a team photo of Duquesne's starting team in set position, flanked on both sides by the coach and assistant coordinator, boldly signed beneath their respective images: BUFF DONELLI (assistant coach), JOHN (Little Chipper) SMITH (head man) and players ERNEST HEFFERLE, BILL CRITCHFIELD, ART AMMAN, Capt. MIKE BASRAK, All-American center STEVE BARKO, JOE MARAS and GEORGE PLATUKIS, GEORGE MATJEK, FRANK ZOPPETTI, KERMIT BECHTLOFF and BILL DILLON. This event, only the third Orange Bowl ever played in Miami, is to this day considered one of the greatest football games of all time, with Duquesne upsetting heavily favored Mississippi State by the score of 13-12. Also included in this lot are two pieces of letterhead with accompanying envelopes from the Hotel Helene, Miami Beach, Florida signed in pencil by all 32 players, coaches, coordinators, assistants and cheerleaders, in essence all Duquesne University participants in this historical event. Newspaper photo age toned with slightly frayed left border not affecting the photograph, else very good. $300 - 400
